Post-Operative Instructions and Healing Guide
Dr. Onur Cavus BDS, PhD — Implant Dentistry Toronto
Gum grafting helps restore lost or thin gum tissue, protecting your teeth and improving esthetics. Proper aftercare is key to comfortable healing and long-term success.
What to Expect After Surgery
Mild swelling or oozing is normal for 24–48 hours.
A small white film may appear over the graft—this is part of normal healing.
Avoid pulling on your lip or cheek to “check” the graft.
The graft site and palate (donor area) will feel tight or tender for several days.
Oral Hygiene
Do not brush or floss the graft area until instructed (usually 10–14 days).
Continue normal brushing and flossing everywhere else.
Use the prescribed antibacterial rinse (often chlorhexidine) twice daily, gently swishing for 30 seconds.
After the first week, Dr. Cavus will advise when gentle brushing can resume near the graft.
Diet & Activity
Stick to soft, cool foods for 7–10 days (yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, pasta).
Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods.
No straws, spitting, or smoking for 7 days—these can loosen the graft.
Keep physical activity light for 48 hours; avoid exercise that raises blood pressure.
Pain & Swelling Control
Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed.
Use ice packs 10 minutes on / 10 minutes off for the first 24 hours.
Minor swelling or tightness at the palate is common and should subside within 3–5 days.
Healing & Follow-Up
Most grafts heal comfortably within 2–3 weeks.
Dissolvable sutures may take 7–10 days to disappear; non-resorbable ones will be removed by Dr. Cavus.
Attend your scheduled follow-up so the graft can be evaluated for stability and thickness.
If you notice persistent bleeding, increasing pain, or swelling after 3 days, contact our office immediately.
Long-Term Care
Once healed:
Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.
Continue flossing or using a water flosser daily.
Attend regular dental hygiene appointments to maintain gum health.
